Although this network has now closed, it may be continuing its work under different auspices. Contact the former co-ordinator named below.
The University of Brighton leads the CPRT regional network for the South. This includes Brighton & Hove, East Sussex Hampshire, Portsmouth, Surrey, and West Sussex, but anyone is welcome to join us. Hilary Ferries is the coordinator for this region.
The South Network relaunched in the autumn term 2014. We are keen to encourage a wide range of professionals to be part of the network and everyone is welcome. During our first year there were three events in the region.
In the first meeting we looked at the invitation from Robin Alexander:
‘Please tell us what the next government should do – or not do – in order to help schools provide the best possible primary education for all the nation’s children.’
Several pupils from Balfour Primary School joined the debate. You can read about it here.
In the Spring term Dr Carol Robinson from the University of Brighton led a discussion on her recent paper:
‘Children, their voices and their experiences of school: What does the evidence tell us?’
Approximately 20 people attended; students, teachers, headteachers and Local Authority staff and we had a very interesting and wide ranging discussion.
In the summer term, Jonathan Cooper, Headteacher of St Luke’s Primary School in Brighton, gave a presentation about the research staff have been carrying out to explore ‘Strategies to support Low Attaining Writers’. Approximately 50 teachers attended the session where Jonathan talked about the different research projects staff have carried out across the school to accelerate the progress of low attaining writers. These included the use of Teaching Assistants and Growth Mindset in the Early Years. He talked about the impact these are having on the writing progress of some of the most vulnerable children in his school. This presentation was very well received and can be found here.
Is there an event you would like to see, or would your school like to join the network? Please contact Hilary Ferries.
We want the network to develop to include activities right across the region and for schools to join the group and share what they have been doing to develop the aims of the CPRT.
