Event Details

Cambridge Primary Review Trust Twilight Session
Beyond Levels: The CLPE Reading and Writing Scales

17th March 4.45pm-6.30pm
Faculty of Education, Cambridge (Donald MacIntyre Building GS5)

One of the Cambridge Primary Review Trust’s key priorities is to encourage an approach to assessment that enhances learning as well as tests, that supports rather than distorts the curriculum and pursues standards and quality in all areas of learning not just the core subjects. In his recent submission to the House of Commons Education Committee Inquiry into the Quality and Purpose of Education in England, Robin Alexander proposed that ‘indicators’ should be included as evaluation options and that we must ‘understand that subjective judgement in relation to some outcomes is inescapable’.

The new CLPE Reading and Writing Scales are a research-based, continuum of progression in reading and writing, describing the behaviours of children as they develop their fluency in literacy. The scales include ‘next steps’ for creating a literacy environment that will nurture reading and writing development, and also include a ‘research principles’ section. They are clearly aligned with the ethos of the CPRT and its aims and priorities. At their launch in February, the scales were enthusiastically received by teachers, leaders and advisers, and the best news is that the resource is free (with a low cost accompanying app of £1.49).

Join us for a free workshop on the 17th March 2016 to explore the scales in detail and to discuss how you might use them in the classroom and as a resource for supporting the development of reading and writing. Please RSVP to the email address provided below by the 10th March 2016.
