This event builds on the publication of a report on My primary school is at the museum, a project led by King’s College London which tested the hypothesis that there may be beneficial learning, social and cultural outcomes for children and their families if a significant portion of their nursery, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 education takes place in a museum or gallery – not to mention benefits for the cultural organisations themselves.
The forum is aimed at museum and gallery learning and education staff, UK school teachers and education specialists and will feature:
- – Keynotes including David Anderson, Director General of Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales and former President of the Museums Association
-Panel discussions with:
- – Museums and schools involved in the project: National Waterfront Museum in Swansea, Tate Liverpool, the Arbeia Roman Fort & Museum, South Shields and their local schools – St Thomas Community Primary School, Life Bank Nursery at Kensington Children’s Centre, and Hadrian Primary School
- – Kate Measures from Heritage Insider Ltd, who conducted the project evaluation
- – Academic advisors Dr Heather King and Dr Jennifer DeWitt of King’s College London’s School of Education, Communication & Society
-Facilitators including Wendy James, concept initiator and architect with experience of creating learning spaces in museums
- – Workshops on a variety of key issues, including:
- – The benefits for early years learning
- – The benefits for museum survival
- – The feasibility of permanent museum-school co-location
Networking opportunities with other learning and education professionals
Provisional timetable:
12:00-13:30: Registration and lunch
13:30-17:30: Panel discussions and workshops
17:30-19:00: Networking and drinks

Please note spaces will be limited. A registration fee of £40 will apply, although a small number of subsidised places will be available.
